Our History

St.Joseph of Cluny Public School,Vellamkolly

Anne Marie Javouhey guided by the impulses of the Holy Spirit founded the society of SJC on 12th May 1807 when she along with her 3 sisters and five others, made their profession in Chalon-sur-saone, and later established themselves in a house in Cluny(France). The congregation from then on began to be called the Srs. Of St.Joseph of Cluny.

Anne Marie Javouhey cared for the orphans, gave education for the children, worked for the human development of all.

In her own life, her missionary activities were extended to the five continents. She was so recognized for her devotedness, ingenuity and auadicity. She was acclaimed as the "Liberator of slaves, the valiant woman,the Apostle of negroes, and the mother of black-Races".

She died on 15th July 1851 and was beatified on 15th Oct 1950".Cluny in south India Trichy with 250 sisters carry out her charism in TamilNadu, Kerala and in Srilanka, through schools, hospital, HIV Aids centres, centres for mentally deranged ,schools prison ministry and non-formal educatin.

Cluny in India

The sisters of St.Joseph of Cluny arrived in India(Pondicherry) in the year 1827 and established our first house in Pondicherry. The sisters went to make Cluny presence felt in various territories and engaged in Education, health, social and pastoral ministries. Some of the places where we have established are New Delhi, Puducherry,TamilNadu, Karnataka, Goa, Kerala, Srilanka, Andra, Bihar, Sikkim, and West Bengal.
